MICHAEL DIX
Michael is a unique talent, combining his interior design and architectural skills to create intricate and complex works of art that have won him a critical and commercial following.
Based in Dundee, Michael studied design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and has since successful launched his own Interior and Architectural Services practice, DIX Design. Michael has turned his hand to designing a wide range of products and spaces, including a staircase made entirely from glass, bespoke chairs and a range of building conversions.
Michael's architectural background can be clearly seen in his artworks and its influence permeates all aspects of his work. Starting with a white background to convey the impression of infinite space, Michael regularly incorporates maps, architectural etchings and diagrams into his pictures and spends time studying photographs and documents of an area before translating them into the finished piece. An understanding of size and scale and how to alter our perception of them is key is to work. Thus, a dramatically scaled-up, 'hyper real' bumble bee is presented on a pristine background, interacting with a recognisable and yet twisted Scottish landmark. The altered scale of both bee and monument provides an air of mystery suggestive of power and movement and invites the viewer to reconsider beauty in the most overlooked subject matter. The artist's intention is to pull you into his 'microcosm' through considered play with the scale and placing of the subject in its surroundings.
Michael shows regularly with a number of Scottish galleries and his work has been displayed at art fairs around the U.K.
