HAZEL VELLACOTT
Hazel is a highly original visual artist based in the Scottish Borders. Her studio is packed with all kinds of resources that she squirrels away until they inspire or find their way into a new piece of work. Old wallpaper, china shards, antique thread bobbins, fabric swatches, letters and discarded drawings have all featured in her collage-like creations. She works with traditional and modern materials to make her paintings and often incorporates print-making within them. The term "mixed-media" is apt for her work.
Hazel studied life-drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art and then went on to further study at Leith School of Art. She exhibits regularly at galleries throughout Scotland including The Stonewall Gallery, Berwickshire, The Doubtfire Gallery, Edinburgh, The Lemond Gallery, Glasgow, Amber Arts, Edinburgh and The Dancing Light Gallery, West Linton.
Hazel has published a book of her paintings entitled The Last Cake of Scotland which celebrates the important things in life, like tea and teacakes.
A recent project was Medicine Chest at Visual Arts Scotland (of which she is an elected member) at the Royal Scottish Academy. This interactive piece involves empty capsules where members of the public are encouraged to write their own medicine and add it to the cabinet. It was a big hit with visitors and critics alike and perfectly showcases Hazel's innovative nature.
