JEAN FEENEY
Jean is based near Crieff in Perthshire and has focused on painting Scottish landscapes since she moved to the area twenty years ago. She has become well known for her dramatic and vibrant visions of the West Coast of Scotland, capturing the raw beauty of some of the most remote and wild parts of the country. Jean's trademark is strong and bold colour combined with energy, light and atmosphere and her sheer joy in painting vividly comes across with every brushstroke. As Jean endeavours to capture the spirit, colour and mood of a place her paintings are not strictly representational but a snapshot of the natural beauty that so moves her.
"Real places inspire me - especially at that fleeting moment when the quality of the light and feel of the breeze, the taste of the air and a gentle sound can stop me in my tracks. So often it's the sea, the coastal landscape and the beaches on the west coast and the islands that quite take my breath away.
Also important are the people who live within these landscapes and make their homes there and do battle with the elements, and in so doing leave their marks - a fence post, a white gable end, a broken gate, a ruined croft, neat rows of lavender or olive trees...
Each of my paintings is my celebration of the place, the people and of course the paint".
Jean cites the Scottish colourists and German expressionists as her main inspiration, as well as Van Gogh for his love of bright colours and thickly applied and textured paint. Jean's landscapes have won her a devoted following, so much so that her limited edition prints are sold around the world. She exhibits regularly throughout the UK and has held a number of solo exhibitions.
