ANNE SKINNER

Anne is based in Edinburgh. She began her artistic career with an honours degree in Painting from Edinburgh College of Art in 1992 and went on to gain a Master's Degree in European Fine Art from Winchester School of Art.

A love of the Scottish coastline has led Anne to concentrate on native seascapes during the past few years, focusing primarily on the coasts of East Lothian and the Isles of Barra and Harris.

The East Lothian paintings capture the desolate beauty, vast skies and expansive sandscapes of this coastline, where shimmers of sun may break through a threatening sky. The Barra and Harris works show the ethereal quality of remote island life, with saturated colours and a cool, almost dazzling brightness.

Anne visits and immerses herself in the landscapes then works in her studio, building the paintings in carefully observed layers. This method takes time and consideration, allowing Anne to portray the sublime beauty at the heart of her subject. There is continual contrast and unease; where sky meets land, light meets dark, the sun overcast by clouds and shadow. The depth and distance achieved by Anne in her compositions show the elusive quality of our coastlines, demonstrating that beauty is often out of reach and unattainable.

Anne has exhibited at the Finsbay Gallery, Isle of Harris, The Laurel Gallery, Edinburgh, the Atholl Gallery, Dunkeld, and the Greens & Blues Gallery, North Berwick. Her work is held in private collections in the USA and Australia.
