PENELOPE ANSTICE
Penelope lives in Dundee and her work is concerned with the landscape of her native Scotland. The subtly shifting light and its effects over the land and sea hold an endless fascination and she returns time and again to the dramatic and ever-changing coastline of the Tay Estuary and the Fife coast. Oil is her favoured medium as it is well suited to the myriad nuances of tonal shift she is trying to convey but watercolour and gouache also play their part in her compositions.
"Working directly from the landscape and from sketches, my work seeks to explore the boundary between realism and abstraction, the point at which an image transcends the purely representational. I usually start with reference to a particular place but often the painting moves off in another direction, always remaining within the realms of realism but becoming more about an evocation of place than a faithful replica. I use brushes, palette knives and often my hands, working fast across the canvas to try to capture a fleeting moment."
Penelope was educated at Edinburgh College of Art and spent fifteen years living and working in London and Amsterdam before moving back to Scotland. She has taken part in numerous solo and group shows across the UK and further afield, including Art Moves in Amsterdam, Wrightson & Co in London and the Strathearn Gallery.
As well as concentrating on her own inspired pieces Penelope is also a successful portrait artist and tutor, regularly holding courses in various locations in Scotland and Spain.
