LETTIE BLACKETT
Lettie grew up on a farm on the west coast of Scotland and is currently living and working in London. One of the rising stars of the London art scene she has held two solo exhibitions in the capital in the past couple of years, both of which were well received and brought her considerable recognition.
Lettie works mainly in oil and watercolour and produces a mixture of tranquil landscapes inspired by trips home to her family farm in Dumfries and Galloway and lively scenes taken from her travels to far-flung locations such as India. Lettie is a passionate traveller and has spent time exploring Australia, Argentina and India as well as shorter trips to other destinations. Her Indian paintings in particular are full of colour, depth and movement and she has managed to capture the true essence of the country in all its riotous glory.
Lettie explains; "Getting away to foreign shores is key to keeping my vision fresh. The everyday can become mundane and blunted when I see it constantly. New places sharpen the senses with their different sights, smells and sounds. After being away I can see home again with the curiosity of a traveler".
Colour is paramount in Lettie's work and the feeling of a particular place emerges through a combination of shapes, lines and colour. She strives simply to portray the world as she sees it, using paint to describe a scene as a writer uses words. "Once I've chosen a subject and set up my easel, I cease from thinking. This is when successful painting happens. The 'middle man' of my mind is cut out and communication only exists between eye and hand".
As well as her two solo shows at the Chance Gallery in 2013 and the Strand Gallery in 2012 Lettie has taken part in Art for India at the Saatchi Gallery and the annual Spring Fling in her native Dumfriesshire, as well as group exhibitions in various galleries in Scotland since 2009.
