ANN COWAN

Ann is an Edinburgh-based artist and the daughter of Patricia Sadler, whose work is also shown at Art Amatoria. Ann is relatively new to painting, taking it up full-time after having practised as a solicitor for many years. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art, focusing on painting urban landscape, and has since shown at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and Visual Arts Scotland annual open exhibitions.

"My work celebrates architecture and the urban environment. I spend a lot of time drawing on location. I look for strong architectural shapes and patterns and take inspiration from my home city of Edinburgh especially doorways, colourful shop fronts, decorative motifs and lettering. The larger paintings develop from ideas in my sketchbooks and are built up over time with layers of collage, acrylic paint and ink. The smaller pieces are taken directly from my sketchbooks. Increasingly there is a fusion of abstraction and figuration in my work. I find the process of arranging papers and surfaces combined with painting and drawing liberating and it drives the direction of my work".

In 2016 Ann held a solo exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery which was a near sell-out. Her work is proving increasingly popular with collectors and Edinburgh residents, who enjoy seeing their corner of the city transformed into a striking piece of art.

More works for sale will be added very soon (October 2016).
