Signed, Watercolour

54cm x 77cm (21.25in x 30.25in).

Paul Maze was born in La Havre, France and grew up with a family background of art and music. Educated in England and France, Maze fought with the Royal Scots Greys during the First World War where he met Winston Churchill, who became a lifelong friend. Churchill wrote a preface to Maze's 1934 book A Frenchman in Khaki and said of his friend,

'His great knowledge of painting and draughtsmanship have enabled him to perfect his remarkable gift. With the fewest of stokes he can create an impression at once true and beautiful'.

After a spell living in Paris Maze settled in Sussex, where he began painting the quintessentially British subjects for which he is probably best known. His work has been exhibited widely in the UK, France and America and is held in a number of major galleries, notably The Tate and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambrige.
